A Friendship Feather

May we ever go softly
toward each other’s hearts
Allowing each other’s
stops and starts
May we tread gently
and truly and rightly
For a friendship not given
or taken lightly
And although the currents
of time and change
may beckon our lives
to rearrange
If we can put trust in
forgiveness and grace
our hearts will survive
our every new face!

Suns rise and set
Moons come and go
Stars journey to a distant sky
Tides ebb and flow
Clouds form and fade
As if to silently say
That all we ever really have
is tomorrow’s yesterday
But there’s something that time
will never ever own
And one day time itself
will have to finally show
that though the winds of change
may carry away the days
My heart will be here holding you
always.

maiden
mother
wizened crone
raven
udder
phoenix lone
First in beauty
then with power
then to wisdom born
Sacred duty
bids me flower
through each face
my soul has worn
For I am
all these in one
and one in all these
And whatever be done must
my whole heart please!

I want to hold you and protect you
I want to never let you go
I want to do all in my power
to help your life be whole
But no matter how I love you
there are things I can’t control
In your own way, in your own time
you’ll grow your own soul
For life is out there waiting
to see what dreams you’ll do
The sky is up there holding
a star just for you
So may your feet follow your heart
and may you have the heart to see
that the best thing you can ever do
is to be who you want to be
And as you take the world by storm
As you ride the winds of change
My heart will be here holding you
forever and a day.

We’ve been around the block together
We’ve been around the bend
We’ve made it through some trying times
and bounced back again
We’ve bent to the world’s winds
we’ve braved stalls and storms
We’ve been each other’s anchor
as we sailed emotional shores
We’ve crossed stubborn boundaries
and turned many a stone
In search of haven for our souls
we’ve found heart and home –

And somehow we’ll always know…

that through the tides of truth and time
talk, laughter and tears
We’re meant to travel this journey of life
as family
all our years.

We share a common language
and we always have so much to say
We follow each other’s train of thought
without losing our way
Our eyes look out at the world
and see similar things
And though our feet walk different roads
our hearts dream similar dreams
Sometimes we’re ropin’ the moon
Sometimes we’re huggin’ the ground
But whatever comes and goes we know
how rare is this friendship we found
And for all the tides of truth and time
talk, laughter and tears
I’m thankful for traveling this journey
with you
all these memorable years.

I’ve been around the block and back
I’ve been around the bend
I’ve been through some trying times
I thought would never end
Sometimes I’ve roped the moon
Sometimes I’ve hugged the ground
And with it all, through thick and thin
You’ve never let me down
You’ve crossed my stubborn boundaries
(and even some of your own!)
You’ve gone to the wall and back for me
You’ve given me heart and home –
And through every doubt and fear
And every dream I’ve dared
I’ve always known someone was here
Who really and truly cared

So thank you for being in my life
as only you could be
Thank you for always being here
so faithfully for me.

We greet
smile
talk
shout
whisper
& cast
joyful
wondering
concerned
loving

And slowly…

warm
embrace
And despite

in this moment
where all our power lies
to remedy any past

What is a house
without loving to enliven it?
What are four walls
without the caring that gives true shelter?
What are windows and doors
without light and friendship to enter within?
What are rooms upon rooms
without the peace that makes them a sanctuary?
What are floors and foundations
without dreams that find some grounding?
What is a tiptop roof
without a little rain to season it?
What are porches and backyards
without gatherings and lazy days?
What is a house, at the end of the day,
without the hearts that make it a home?

A pound of possibility
for every ounce of despair
A mile of mercy
for every step leading nowhere
A mountain of sky
when your back’s to a wall
A rope of the longest length
when your faith takes a fall
A stepping stone
for every stumbling block
A cushion of kindness
for every hard knock
A sheltering slope
when a storm is near
A well of compassion
for every falling tear
An unfolding heart
to greet the hand of fate
A second chance
when it seems too late
A lifeline of forgiveness
for expectations unmet
An eternity of time
for things you haven’t done yet
An opening window
for every closing door
Wings to fly
to a friendlier shore
The grace to walk gently
upon each other’s earth
Memories to measure
what the true things are worth…

We’ve weathered time and distance
We’ve braved stalls and storms
We’ve found common ground
in all its changing forms
We’ve opened up our souls
we’ve let down our guard
Sometimes we touch a nerve
But finally, we always touch heart
And, yes, the tides of life
will always ebb and flow
As roads will twist and turn
and winds of change will blow --
But you and I
will always be friends,
as time will show!

come in all shapes and sizes
of large, medium and small
They may be short, round, skinny
or extra gigantically tall
One may be person of mental stature
and a king or a queen(!) among men
One may have a huge personality
or be bulgingly masculine or feminine
Another may compare to the size of a pea
or a small delicate pearl
a spot or a dot in the universal sea
a freckle on the face of the world
There’s room for any depth or dimension
of astronomical or miniscule kind --
Though it’s surely not hard to admire
a large and loquacious mind --
But the measure that goes to the greatest length
is of one’s most private part
In the world of friendship, nothing compares
to the size of a generous HEART!

Love is love in any language
any form or face
Love is love in any heart
or truth or time or place
And love so loves us that it finds us
wherever we ever are --
whether we’re rooted to the ground
or flying skies afar
And though we may have different dreams
and walk on different roads,
there are things holding our hearts together
that only our hearts can know…
And though the ones we love are those
we sometimes must let go
Sooner or later time will show that
love always knows the way back home.

But also ----
those sweet / crazy / off-the-wall / on-the-mark folks
who rumble around in our lives
tearing down walls
kickin’ booty
lending an ear or hand
touching heart
moving soul
turning mountains back into molehills --
those thick-or-thinners, rain-or-shiners,
forever-friends
who give us longer rope & hang in there
no matter what,
whether it means holding on --
or sometimes letting go.

Friendship that’s destined to go somewhere
understands where we’ve been
Friendship that can travel anywhere
is always willing to take us in
Friendship that’s on the up and up
is there whenever we’re down
Friendship whose sky has no limit
always gives us some ground
Friendship that’s not afraid of heights
helps our dreams unfold
Friendship in its softest sweetest bloom
lets our setbacks go untold
Friendship with moveable boundaries
can cross dividing lines
Friendship greater than fear
knows nothing’s ever lost it can’t help find
Friendship that can bend in a storm
won’t be felled by a feather
Friendship that sticks through thick or thin
is the glue that holds us together --
This friendship we’ve found
is precious ground…
I know we’ll be friends forever!
